Australia’s Battery Opportunity
Australia is already a worldwide leader in residential solar per capita (The Guardian), but this isn’t the only area with opportunities for expansion. Battery storage systems are quickly becoming a new frontier in the clean energy and renewables sector.
So, why have battery systems become such a popular option? Once installed, battery storage systems allow you to cut peak costs, achieve grid independence, and access a reliable source of power during outages. They are also affordable thanks to a range of rebates and incentives.

RedEarth encapsulates this well on their website, stating that “for decades, Australian households have relied on a grid that is becoming increasingly expensive, congested and vulnerable to disruption. A Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) gives you greater control over how and when you use energy helping you reduce costs, improve reliability and build long-term energy resilience.”
In the second half of 2025 alone, over 180,000 home batteries were installed (Red Earth Energy), and the untapped potential in the commercial and industrial sector is limitless. There are now scalable solutions available for Australian businesses, logistics hubs, educational facilities, agricultural sites, and manufacturing facilities.
The RedEarth Story
RedEarth was co-founded by Charlie Walker, Chris Winter, and Bruce Ebzery in 2013, and their name draws direct inspiration from Australia’s expansive red centre. At this time, their mission was to ‘take electricity where it isn’t’, and as you’ll see in the case studies below, this is certainly true today.
13 years later, RedEarth has grown exponentially, delivering advanced battery storage systems backed by an intuitive cloud-based proprietary software. Their products offer:
> Modular design: 10ft, 20ft, and 40ft containerised formats for fast deployment
> Scalable capacity: From 300kWh to 2.5MWh, expandable for future growth
> Flexible configuration: On-grid, off-grid, or hybrid programmable systems
> Generator-ready: Diesel–battery hybrid integration for maximum uptime
> Smart control: Powered by RedEarth’s EMS and EPP software, enabling seamless energy trading and optimisation
RedEarth Case Studies
Case Study 1: Boisos Electrical
RedEarth PowerOasis: 100 kW continuous power output, 375 kWh battery storage, and a 100 kW ground-mounted solar PV array.
Description: Located in remote Carnarvon Gorge National Park, this project was delivered for a BIG4 caravan park expanding with a new commercial kitchen and additional amenities. The existing grid connection, located on the fringe of the network, could not support the increased energy demand. RedEarth Energy Storage worked with local installer Boisos Electrical to design and supply a customised off-grid commercial energy solution.

Challenge: The caravan park could not secure additional power from the DNSP, as the existing network lacked the capacity to support the expansion without major upgrades and delays. The remote location, around four hours from the installer’s base, also made servicing costly and time-consuming. The client needed a reliable system with remote monitoring to minimise callouts and maintain uninterrupted operation.
Solution: RedEarth and Boisos Electrical delivered a scalable off-grid system featuring:
- 100 kW continuous power output
- 375 kWh battery storage
- 100 kW ground-mounted solar PV array
Completed in May 2024, the project allowed the caravan park to expand without relying on further grid infrastructure. The system also included RedEarth’s back-to-base remote monitoring platform, enabling real-time performance monitoring and early fault detection.
Case Study 2: Tatiara Trucks & Dingo Commercial BESS
RedEarth Dingo: 100 kW inverter capacity, 240 kWh battery storage, solar integration, and generator backup.

Description: When South Australian transport business Tatiara Trucks outgrew the available grid capacity at its site, it needed a solution to support business growth, reduce electricity costs, and provide reliable backup power. Working with Bordertown Pumps and Refrigeration Pty Ltd and RedEarth Energy Storage, the business installed a customised 100 kW / 240 kWh containerised Dingo commercial battery energy storage system (BESS) integrated with solar and a diesel generator.
Challenge: As the business expanded, its existing solar system could no longer meet growing energy demands. Operating on a 200A grid connection, the site regularly drew more than 100A and occasionally exceeded 200A during peak periods. A grid upgrade was prohibitively expensive, annual electricity costs had reached around $100,000, and the existing generator backup caused a 10-second interruption during outages, disrupting operations for around 60 staff.
Solution: RedEarth designed a customised 10-foot containerised Dingo BESS featuring:
- 100 kW inverter capacity (dual 50 kW inverters)
- 240 kWh battery storage
- 276 × 440 W bifacial solar panels
- Integrated Cummins diesel generator backup
- Millisecond transition during grid outages
The system increased available site capacity to 340A, allowing the business to expand without a costly grid upgrade. It now supplies around 80% of the site’s annual energy needs, has reduced annual electricity costs by approximately 80%, with summer power bills close to zero, and eliminated demand charges that could have added a further $20,000 per year.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)?
A Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) stores energy so it can be used when your business needs it most. It can charge from solar, the grid, or both, then supply power during peak demand, overnight, or during a grid outage. For commercial and industrial businesses, a BESS can help reduce electricity costs, cut peak demand charges, improve energy resilience, and provide greater control over how and when energy is used.
Who is RedEarth and what do they offer?
RedEarth is an Australian designer and manufacturer of Battery Energy Storage Systems, supplying homes, businesses, and remote communities since 2013. Their commercial solutions are available in scalable 10-foot, 20-foot, and 40-foot containerised formats, with capacities ranging from 300 kWh to 2.5 MWh. Systems can be configured for on-grid, off-grid, or hybrid operation and include RedEarth’s proprietary energy management software for intelligent monitoring and optimisation.
Are there rebates available for Battery Energy Storage Systems?
Yes. A range of rebates, incentives, and financing programs are available to help make battery storage more affordable, although what’s available depends on your location and project. Our team can help you understand the current options and identify any incentives that may apply to your commercial or industrial battery installation.
Do you offer commercial battery storage solutions across Australia?
We certainly do. Energus can assist with the installation and set up of Battery Energy Storage Systems across Australia, supporting projects from initial design through to installation and commissioning. With regional teams and experience working across different network requirements, we help businesses integrate battery storage into new and existing energy systems wherever they’re located.
Can a commercial battery system help me avoid an expensive grid upgrade?
In many cases, yes. If your site is reaching the limits of its existing grid connection, a Battery Energy Storage System can increase available capacity without the cost and delays of a network upgrade. As the RedEarth case studies demonstrate, battery storage can also reduce electricity costs, improve backup power, and support future business growth.
